What Is the Hummer CrabWalk Exactly? 

The Hummer CrabWalk is a feature that allows you to turn all four wheels in the same direction simultaneously and then move in a diagonal direction. When Hummer Crabwalk mode isn’t engaged, all four wheels will make any turning motion that you make with the steering wheel. A right turn will mean all four wheels turn to the right while driving around Indianola. 

How Hummer EV CrabWalk Works 

The goal of Hummer CrabWalk is to make it easier to get in and out of tight spaces, like when trying to park in Southeast Des Moines or navigating narrow, twisting passages on your favorite off-road trail. Stuck with parallel parking? Hummer CrabWalk can help with that. 

Hummer CrabWalk works when the vehicle is stationary or going less than 1.2 mph. All four wheels pivot in the same direction by up to 10 degrees. The wheels then move the vehicle a few feet diagonally. The vehicle’s computer adjusts the wheels automatically, so you won’t have to worry about moving this behemoth. 

How to Turn on Hummer EV CrabWalk On

There are a few steps to engaging CrabWalk Mode on your GMC Hummer EV.

1. Keep your GMC Hummer EV stationary or moving slower than 1.2 mph.
2. Center the steering wheel.
3. Locate the Driver Mode Control dial on the center console.
4. Hold down the 4-Wheel Steer button on the left side (9 o’clock) of the Driver Mode Control dial for 6 seconds or until the CrabWalk animation on the central infotainment screen is complete.
5. Release the button.
6. Watch for the HD Surround Vision on the infotainment screen.
7. See the orange crab symbol in the lower right corner of the Driver Display to confirm CrabWalk is engaged.

You can drive as fast as 20 mph in Hummer CrabWalk Mode. Any speeds above 20 mph will cause the wheels to turn at less of an angle. 

How to Turn Hummer CrabWalk Mode Off

You can disengage Hummer EV CrabWalk one of two ways:

1. Center the steering wheel and keep your vehicle still. Then, push the 4-Wheel Steering icon on the Driver Mode Selector.
2. Drive above 25 mph for 10 seconds. Your vehicle will automatically disengage Hummer CrabWalk Mode.

Some advanced safety features do not work in Hummer CrabWalk Mode, such as Lane Keep Assist, Transparent Trailer, Articulation Angle Indicator, and Jackknife Alert.
