What Tools Do I Need for a Car Battery Installation?

Before you get started, you’ll need to gather the proper supplies. This includes everything from a genuine OEM-approved battery to safety equipment to protect you during your installation. Here is a checklist that you can take to our parts department:

• Wire brush
• Pliers

How to Install a Car Battery: Step-by-Step

Now that you know the tools of the trade, it’s time to get to work! Here are the steps you’ll need to take in your garage in Indianola or Pella.

• Turn off the engine and engage the parking brake. Let the engine cool before you begin.
• Put on your safety gear, then pop the hood and look for the battery.
• Loosen the nut that connects the negative terminal to the battery. Twist it off and pull it off the terminal. If it is stuck, don’t try to force it. Contact our service center for help.
• Remove the red battery cable from the positive terminal. It’s important to keep the terminals and cable ends far away from each other until they are both entirely removed from the electrical source.
• Loosen the hold-down clamps and pull the battery up and away from the car. Be sure to prepare because the battery is much heavier than it looks!
• Look for any signs of corrosion in the battery tray. You’ll need to remove it with anti-corrosion spray or a baking soda solution. If everything is clean, place the new battery in the battery tray. Apply anti-corrosion solution to both terminals.
• Attach the red cable to the positive terminal. Attach the black cable to the negative terminal. Avoid touching the cables to one another as you work, or sparks could form.
• Make sure the connections are secure, and put the hold-down clamps into place. Make sure that the battery cannot move.
• Close the hood and start the car. Congratulations, now you know how to install a car battery!
